What Is Enamelled Aluminium Wire — And When Is It the Right Choice?
Enamelled aluminium wire is an electrical-grade (EC-grade) aluminium conductor coated with a continuous polymer enamel insulation — typically polyester, polyesterimide, or polyamide-imide. Like enamelled copper wire, the enamel film insulates adjacent conductor turns in a tightly wound coil, enabling efficient electromagnetic energy conversion in motors, transformers, and coils. The key distinction is the conductor material: aluminium instead of copper.
Also referred to as aluminium magnet wire or aluminium winding wire, enamelled aluminium wire offers two primary advantages over copper in specific applications: significantly lower material cost (aluminium is typically 60–70% less expensive than copper by weight) and lower density (aluminium is approximately one-third the density of copper), resulting in windings that are 30–35% lighter for a given conductor cross-section. These advantages make enamelled aluminium wire the standard choice for distribution transformer LV windings and a cost-effective option for certain motor coil applications.
