Product Overview

LT/MV PVC & XLPE Power Cables - What They Are and Why Insulation Grade Matters

LT/MV PVC and XLPE power cables are electrical cables designed to carry the full rated current of electrical equipment and systems — from individual motors and distribution boards at low tension (LT, up to 1.1 Kv) to primary distribution feeders at medium voltage (Up to 3.3 Kv). Unlike control cables, which carry low-level signals, power cables must be sized for the full load current, voltage drop, and short circuit rating of the circuit they serve making correct cable selection critical for both safety and performance.

The two insulation grades available  PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) have fundamentally different performance characteristics. PVC is the standard grade for LT power cable applications at 70°C conductor temperature. XLPE allows a higher conductor operating temperature of 90°C permitting a higher current-carrying capacity for the same conductor cross-section, or the same current-carrying capacity from a smaller conductor. XLPE also has superior resistance to moisture, chemicals, and thermal ageing making it the preferred insulation for MV cables, underground direct-buried installations, and LT applications in chemically aggressive or high-temperature environments.

BMI manufactures LT/MV PVC and XLPE power cables at our ISO 9001:2015 certified facility in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan in copper and aluminium conductors, armoured and unarmoured, from 1.1 Kv to 3.3 Kv, across the full cross-section range from 1.5 sq.mm to 630 sq.mm. Manufactured to IS 1554, IS 7098, IEC 60502, and BS 6346 as applicable to the cable specification, with high voltage type test and routine test certificates available per drum for project documentation requirements.

Low Tension (LT) vs Medium Voltage (MV) Power Cables - Understanding the Difference

The voltage rating of a power cable determines its insulation thickness, construction requirements, and the standards it is manufactured to. Selecting the correct voltage class is fundamental, as under-rated cables present a serious electrical safety risk.

Low Tension (LT) Power Cables

Standard for all LV distribution and industrial power wiring up to 1100V — the most widely used power cable voltage class in Indian industry

Medium Voltage (MV) Power Cables

For HT distribution and primary feeders at 3.3 kV to 33 kV — XLPE insulated, screened, armoured MV cables to IS 7098 / IEC 60502-2

LT/MV Power Cable Range - All Grades, Constructions & Voltage Classes

BMI manufactures power cables across the full range of LT and MV voltage classes, PVC and XLPE insulation grades, copper and aluminium conductors, and armoured and unarmoured constructions.

LT PVC Insulated Power Cables (1.1 kV)

Standard PVC insulated, PVC sheathed LT power cables for LV distribution networks, industrial motor feeders, distribution board mains, and general LT power wiring. The most widely specified LT power cable type across Indian industry and commercial construction. Available in armoured (SWA/STA) and unarmoured versions.

LT XLPE Insulated Power Cables (1.1 kV)

XLPE insulated LT power cables for higher current-carrying capacity, superior moisture resistance, and longer cable service life versus PVC. Increasingly preferred for underground LT distribution cables, industrial power feeders in high-temperature environments, and LT cable installations in chemically aggressive conditions.

Cable Construction

Power Cable Construction - Layer by Layer & Abbreviations

Understanding how a power cable is constructed and what the abbreviations in its designation mean ensures the correct cable is specified for the installation voltage, environment, and method.

LT Armoured XLPE Power Cable Construction

1. Core Insulation — PVC / XLPE

Solid (up to 16 sq.mm) or stranded (25 sq.mm and above) copper or aluminium conductor. Conductor class and resistivity verified against IS 8130.

2. XLPE / PVC Core Insulation

Individual insulation over each conductor, XLPE for 90°C rating or PVC for 70°C rating. Colour coded per IS/IEC convention for core identification (R/Y/B for three-phase)

3. Inner PVC Sheath / Bedding

PVC bedding over assembled cores provides a smooth, firm surface for armouring application and protects cores from armouring wire abrasion

4. Galvanised Steel Wire Armouring (SWA)

Single layer of galvanised steel wires providing mechanical protection impact, crush, and rodent resistance for direct buried and harsh environment installations. Omitted in unarmoured versions

5. Outer PVC / FRLS / LSZH Sheath

Overall protective outer sheath provides mechanical protection over the armour, colour identification, and fire performance rating (PVC / FRLS / LSZH compound)
