What Are Single Core & Multicore Cables — And Where Is Each One Used?

Single core cables are the workhorse of everyday electrical wiring. Each cable carries one insulated copper conductor — multistrand plain annealed copper covered with PVC insulation, without an outer sheath. Because the conductor is multistrand rather than solid, the cable stays flexible and easy to pull through conduits, route inside panels, and terminate cleanly. BMI single core cables are manufactured as per IS 694 for voltage grades upto and including 1100 Volts.

BMI manufactures single core cables in two grades. The FR-LF (Flame Retardant, Lead Free) grade uses FR lead free PVC insulation — the choice for house wiring, panel wiring, and conduit wiring where fire safety matters, available from 0.5 sqmm to 6.0 sqmm. The standard PVC grade covers the heavy sizes — 10 sqmm to 300 sqmm — for industrial wiring, power distribution, and panel and machinery connections carrying up to 550 Amps.

Multicore cables bundle multiple insulated conductors inside a single PVC outer sheath — so one cable run replaces several individual wires. The cores are laid up round and the whole construction stays flexible, which is why multicore cables are the standard choice for connecting machines, pumps, panels, and moving equipment. BMI multicore cables use multistrand bright electrolytic annealed bare copper conductors, PVC insulated and PVC sheathed, as per IS 694.

When the core count goes beyond power delivery into signalling and control, the same construction becomes a control cable. BMI control cables are available from 5 core up to 19 core in sizes from 0.5 to 6.0 sqmm — built for control panels, automation systems, and machinery control wiring where many circuits travel together between the panel and the machine.

FAQ - Single Core & Multicore Cables

A single core cable has one insulated conductor and no outer sheath — used where each circuit is wired individually, typically inside conduits and panels. A multicore cable bundles two or more insulated cores inside a single PVC outer sheath, so one cable connects a complete circuit — the standard choice for connecting machines, pumps, and equipment.

FR-LF stands for Flame Retardant, Lead Free. The PVC insulation resists flame spread and contains no lead — recommended for house wiring, panel wiring, and conduit wiring where fire safety is specified. BMI FR-LF single core cables are available from 0.5 to 6.0 sqmm.

Single core cables from 0.5 sqmm to 300 sqmm; multicore cables in 2, 3 and 4 core from 0.5 to 300 sqmm; and control cables from 5 core to 19 core in 0.5 to 6.0 sqmm. All as per IS 694, voltage grade upto and including 1100 Volts.

All BMI single core, multicore, and control cables are manufactured as per IS 694 for voltage grades upto and including 1100 Volts, at our ISO 9001:2015 certified plant in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan.

The minimum order value is ₹2 Lakh. Cables are supplied in standard 100 metre coils (180 and 270 metre options available in FR-LF sizes) or packed as per your requirement.
