BMI XL is a mid-grade flat submersible cable designed for everyday borewell applications in apartments, villas, commercial complexes, and small industries. It sits between the entry-level Agri cable and the premium Rubber Flex — delivering 10% higher current capacity and anti-burst protection without the full rubber construction cost. If your application is a standard residential or light-commercial borewell running a single submersible pump, XL is the correct specification.

The XL has two key upgrades over the Agri cable. First, it delivers 10% higher current carrying capacity through increased copper cross-section meaning the pump motor receives full rated power with less heat build-up in the cable. Second, it incorporates anti-burst PVC walls between the individual cores, which physically prevent core-to-core contact underground the most common cause of motor winding damage in standard flat submersible cables. The Agri cable has neither of these features.

Anti-burst PVC walls are engineered separators moulded between the individual cores inside the flat cable. In a standard flat submersible cable, if one core’s insulation degrades due to voltage surge, mechanical stress, or age it can contact the adjacent core underground, causing a short circuit. This typically burns the motor winding and requires pulling the entire pump assembly out of the borewell for repair. Anti-burst walls physically block this core-to-core contact, even when one insulation layer is compromised, significantly reducing the risk and cost of underground motor failures.

Choose XL when your borewell depth is moderate (up to approximately 150 metres), the geological formation is standard (not hard granite or rocky strata), and the application is residential or light-commercial (apartment block, villa complex, small factory). If your borewell is deep (150+ metres), the rock is hard, or the pump runs 24×7 for industrial dewatering, upgrade to the Rubber Flex — its double-layer rubber protection and 30% higher current capacity are specifically engineered for those conditions.

Cable sizing depends on three factors: the pump motor’s nameplate current (in amperes), the borewell depth (which determines the cable run length for voltage drop calculation), and the supply voltage at the panel. As a starting point, cross-reference the motor’s rated current against the XL’s current capacity table for your required conductor size, then verify that voltage drop across the full cable run stays within 5% of the supply voltage. No — do not use the higher current rating as a reason to install a larger pump than the cable is sized for. The 10% higher current capacity means the cable runs cooler at the rated motor load, reducing thermal degradation and extending cable life. Always size your cable based on the actual pump motor nameplate current and borewell depth. The thermal headroom is a reliability and longevity benefit, not a licence to increase motor size.
